I’ve decided to round up my favorite water session locations to share with you if you are ever considering one!
When choosing a location for a water engagement there are some things to consider such as:
What type of session are you wanting?
Paddle boarding, waves to play in, something more adventurous like hiking to a waterfall?
All of these will play into the body of water you want to choose. Clarity of water is also something to keep in mind for any submerged images you are wanting. I have been fortunate enough to shoot at many locations and still have many destinations on my bucket list. Below are 4 of my favorite spots for water sessions or a water engagement.
1. Lake Chelan – Washington
If you knew me, you would know this place holds a special place in my heart. I grew up camping in Lake Chelan and although it has sentimental value to me, it is an awesome place for a water engagement.
This is the location I recommend for a water session here in the PNW. It has great clarity and amazing blue/turquoise water when the sun is shining on it. In addition, it is a great swimming/paddle board/boating location. The water temperatures are definitely on the cooler side but are totally bearable during the summer months.
2. Maluaka Beach + Kamaole Beach III – Maui
There are a ton of locations on Maui that would be great to shoot at (I mean, it IS Hawaii!), but I think the south side beaches are the best for accessing the water and they seem less crowded. Maluaka is one of my favorite beaches because there is this little cove where no one seems to go, so we always end up getting it to ourselves and it has great snorkeling just around the corner. Kamaole is such a great beach because its super close to Kihei and there are always turtles swimming close to shore. With any beach comes fun waves to play in along with Hawaii’s notorious water tones.
3. Lake Tahoe – California/Nevada
This gem is such a paradise. I got to witness its crazy weather in May with 70 degree weather one day followed by snow and rain the next. Just like Lake Chelan, Lake Tahoe has beautiful blue tones and amazing clear water for those underwater shots.
4. Lower Lewis Falls – Washington
If you are wanting more of an adventurous style shoot, this waterfall is amazing and I wish I had more clients that wanted to shoot there. With cliff jumping and floating this is a dream location.
